The Story
"Following my experience in Manila in 2017 and 2018, I had the opportunity to get to know briefly the city and the inhabitants of this gigantic metropolis which crushes those who have very limited economic means of subsistence. Some time later, I came across images of cemeteries in Manila where poor families squat graves and make them a home. The population of the Philippines is predominantly practicing Christians, so the inhabitants of the cemeteries take care of the memory of the dead, like guardians of tombs. I had heard of this population before, and seeing them I decided to work on these images. The Untitled (Manila) painting arose from this experience of the city of Manila and found its expression through the subject of these photographic documents. It somehow reflects the ambiguity of this urban cohabitation between life and death." – Aslı Torcu
