Brutta Figura VIIII - The Original
An unframed 91.5 x 61 cm original artwork by Colette LaVette.
Brutta Figura VIIII consists of large impasto, expressionist marks, from which figures emerge. In line with "The Brutta Figura" Project, VIIII sees the canvas used as the paint palette, with no stage of creation hidden or denied and each figure being a product of the surrounding chaos. ‘Brutta figura’ in Italian culture is when someone appears in a bad light. The antithesis is bella figura, something which everyone hopes to attain and is arguably keeping up appearances.
Painted using natural pigments made in her studio, Colette created this piece by using minerals such as iron oxide and bohemian green earth mixed with linseed oil, which resulted in a thick, luscious archival quality oil paint. Applied to Italian linen, the painting consists of large impasto expressionist marks, from which figures emerge.
