Category of Near Infinite Permutation II - Studio marks
This limited edition print was created by Nina Rodin.
Category of Near Infinite Permutations II - Studio marks has a Limited Edition print run of 100 across 3 sizes. Each giclee print comes unframed with a white border, printed with archival inks, with a digitally signed label by the artist. The limited edition print captures the details, textures and colours of the original artwork and is printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm paper.
For three months, Nina Rodin toured seven London Art colleges and photographed thousands of painterly marks made by artists both in finished works and accidentally in the studio with a macrolense and a special flash light set up. From these she selected 1000 photographic details which were printed in high resolution on Japanese Washi paper, which she precisely cut out into squares, folded into butterflies and pinned into a phyllotaxic Fibonacci spiral with entomological pins normally used for inset collections.
This work is central to Nina Rodin’s practice both as a scientist and as painter. She approaches the medium of paint with the eye of a scientist: collecting, counting, dissecting, ordering. Pulling the wings of the butterfly only to put together a new painting in a world where painting is in danger of being seen as old and crusty, where all the ways of applying one colour next to another have been tried. Every mark in very butterfly produces a sense of déjà vu but as a whole, the work is an ode to the complexity of painting and human creativity.
